Just to Reiterate: Branstad Is Not Stopping the Common Core

“Wait, wait… I thought Governor Branstad has rejected the federal Common Core?”

Nope, not quite as Mike Wiser reports at The Sioux City Journal (and we told you yesterday).

“What we’re saying is this: We want to make sure this is an Iowa academic standard and the needs of our state are not going to be dictated by the federal government, and we believe what we did was clarify what the Iowa Core is all about, and that is the state academic standards,” Branstad said Thursday as he was leaving a conference at Des Moines Area Community College in Ankeny.

“What we need to have is a uniform standard of what students need to know at each grade level, but in terms of how (local districts) teach them and the curriculum they use, that will be developed locally. The standard is just what is expected to be known, but how you teach it is a local determination.”

This is why I said the executive order was a positive step, but wanted to make sure everyone knew that this did not repeal the Common Core State Standards.  Our fight is not over, and because of the misinformation floating out there about this executive order may actually be harder now.

If you haven’t done so yet, please take time to sign our petition.  Governor Branstad, the state legislature and the state board of education need to hear from you!

Hey, I’ve been trying to get a grassroots movement going in Southern Ohio! I’m pretty obsessed with reading all of this and researching right now and I’m looking forward to a break so can’t wait to watch the Iowa/OSU game Saturday. My husband was saying how Iowa wasn’t a “ranked” team and I said who cares atleast they are doing something about getting CC repealed! So kudos to your state for fighting so hard. I know the battle isn’t over but I look at how far that you have come and it is a little less discouraging! Thank you for fighting for your state and keep Ohio in your thoughts and prayers and good luck this weekend Hawkeyes, right?
